Welcome to the Weird Crime Theater Field Report. In this series I’d like to talk about the process of making my first graphic novel. A behind the scenes look at my progress while drawing, editing and designing the book.
Past the giddiness of the kickstarter win and past the emotional highs that come with that, it’s now time to get to work. This week I’ve been looking at the pages I’ve drawn and looking for dips in continuity. For the most part I’m happy with the work I’ve done but this project wasn’t always drawn in the best of conditions and occasionally I wound up with panels like the first one above.

I’m not too sure what happened here but life was a bit of a roller-coaster back then. A lot has happened in the last 9 years. I’m now in a much better place both mentally and artistically. So I was able to redraw the panel in a much more dynamic and lucid manner. It is my hope that, although I believe there is something to the art produced at the “original moment” of comic production, the new panels will lend themselves to a better overall reading experience.

At this point I’m about one-third of the way through the book. The first stories needing the most work, are taking the most time. Things will begin to speed up shortly and I will be drawing the final 2 stories needed to complete the book.

Weird Crime Theater is a kickstarted graphic novel that will be on sale this summer.

Webcomic update!

The Mindgator: For What Do You Fight

Page 046!

Yeah, a transition page. As much of this comic parallels my life, believe it or not, this page is no exception. There’s been a lot of movement in my life this year but the dust is beginning to settle as we enter, a favorite month of mine, November. The transitions in my life have often been wrought with worry for the future and what I’ve lost. I find my mind more clear this time around. I can feel good things coming. Both in the comic and in my life. Stay tuned.

Happy October! Fall really is my favorite time of year but just as I think I’m recovering from the summer I over do it and windup getting sick.
It’s been a bit hard for me to get to drawing the comic in the past couple of weeks. I’m really just over worked at the day job, then I got sick, then lots of personal drama. But hopefully these things will settle down and I can get back on schedule this week.

So, I’ve been working on the mindgator comic pretty much constantly. There was a story outlined and even pages drawn before I started but somewhere in the posting of pages I realized a lot of the larger themes breathing just beneath the surface of my story. Some unexpected left-turns were made to answer those themes and now I am in unscripted territory.

But this is not the first time. Elbis was drawn in much the same way. A kind of “gonzo comic” of my life in Tokyo. Although I suppose in the world of art, that could be a bit redundant.

The “maneki” cat above is the chapter symbol for chapter 1. It is taken from the object dangling from the end of Mai’s electro-gun on page 10. It is a symbol of luck or wealth depending on which arm is raised. My idea being that you’d want a little luck or wealth in your job so in this case, Mai puts it on her gun, her work tool.

The evelution of the chapter titles is something that I’m currently hammering out for the print version of the book but for the time being I’ll leave the titles for chapters 1 and 2 in their current state. Chapter 3 is the final form of chapter titling I’ll be using, I think.
